The Arya Vysya (also known as Komati) is an ancient Telugu-speaking trading community. Orthodox Komatis follow rituals prescribed in the Vasavi Puranam. Goddess Vasavi Kanyaka Parameshwari is the Kula Devi.
A large number of Vysyas originally lived on the banks of the Godavari River — locally called Gomati — hence the name Komati. After Vasavi Matha's Agnipravesham, from 714 original gotras, 102 Gotras remain among Arya Vysyas.
King Kusuma Sresti & Queen Kusumamba ruled Penugonda in the 10th-11th century AD as a vassal of Vengi Kingdom.
On Vaishaka Shuddha Dashami, twins were born — Virupaksha and Vasavi. Vasavi was an incarnation of Adiparashakthi.
King called chiefs of all 714 Gotras. 102 Gotras chose to fight for dignity. Vasavi chose non-violence.
On Magha Shuda Padyami, Vasavi and 102 Gotra couples entered sacred fire at Brahmakunda on Godavari banks.
Sons brought 102 Shivalingas from Kasi. Vasavi is worshipped as Komatikula Devatha to this day.
